Overview
Make a dayhike on the Shira plateau, halfway up the famous Mount Kilimanjaro! This hike is perfect for those who want to experience the Kili, without actually going to the top. A driver takes you up to the Londorossi Gate on the westside of the mountain, at an altitude of 2,100 meters. Here your five-hour hike with an ascent of more than 1,000 meters begins, steadily up through tropical mountain forests. You might even spot some special monkeys and birds!
Morning Pickup & Scenic Drive
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a hotel pickup. The journey to West Kilimanjaro takes you through a lush forest reserve, where you may spot Colobus monkeys swinging through the trees. As you ascend to the Shira Plateau, the air gets cooler and the landscape more dramatic—setting the stage for a day of exploration.
Hiking the Shira Plateau
Starting at 3,500m above sea level, your hike begins across the breathtaking Shira Plateau, a high-altitude wilderness with panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro’s Kibo Peak, its northern glaciers, and—on clear days—the plains of Amboseli National Park in Kenya. Accompanied by a ranger, you’ll explore different trails, pass volcanic cones, and pause at various viewpoints along the northern rim of Shira Crater. A picnic lunch under the open sky adds to the experience.
Descent & Return
After approximately 4 hours of moderate hiking, or sooner if you wish, you’ll make your way back to the vehicle and begin the return journey to your hotel. While hiking boots aren’t necessary, comfortable closed shoes like trainers are recommended. The day ends with memories of untamed landscapes, high-altitude beauty, and a taste of Kilimanjaro’s grandeur—all in a single day.
Discounts policy
This is a private trip and hence the group will only consist of the people you chose to travel with. For children the following discounts apply: 1 child under 5 years 100 % (further children under 5 years 50 %), 5-12 years 50%. Children with a 100% discount are not included in the total number of travelers. The stated children’s discounts are limited to 2 children per private trip. If more children (up to and including 12 years) travel with the group, we are gladly prepared to make you an individual offer.
